Chris Herd has returned to Aston Villa, after an injury-ravaged loan spell at Bolton expired over the weekend.

Herd joined Wanderers in September and made his debut in the League Cup defeat at Chelsea the following evening, but played just three games during his time at Macron Stadium - the last of which was on October 4 - after picking up an Achilles injury whilst on international duty with Australia.

With Kevin McNaughton back in the first-team frame, after injury and illness, respectively, Herd is unlikely to return to the Trotters, with manager Neil Lennon also able to call upon the services of Oscar Threlkeld and current first-choice right-back Josh Vela.

Despite his lack of game time over the last month, Australia boss Ange Postecoglou has named the 25-year-old in his squad for the forthcoming friendly against Japan, in what is their final warm-up game ahead of January's Asia Cup tournament.
