Bolton have completed the signing of Aston Villa utility man Chris Herd on an emergency loan deal that will run until November 8, 2014.

Herd has spent his entire professional career at Villa Park, having joined the club at the age of 15. He made his senior debut as a late substitute in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in November 2010 and has since gone on to make 42 appearances at first-team level.

The 25-year-old can play in any number of positions across the back four and in midfield, although he is likely to be in contention for a right-back berth during his brief time at Macron Stadium - with Kevin McNaughton yet to make a full return from injury and illness that have kept him sidelined for more than a month.

Oscar Threlkeld is the club's only other recognised right-back, with Alex Baptiste, Joe Riley and Hayden White all out on loan, but some disappointing displays from the promising youngster has prompted manager Dougie Freedman into bringing a senior option to the club for an initial period of six weeks.

Herd will wear the number 29 shirt during his time at Bolton and could make his debut when Wanderers face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, on Wednesday evening.
