Tyrone Mears, who left Bolton at the end of last season, has gone on trial with Premier League side Everton.

Mears was once regarded as one of the hottest defensive prospects in English football, after an impressive four-year spell at Preston North End earned him a £1million move to West Ham United in the summer of 2006.

His career has stalled in recent years, however. He made just six appearances for the Hammers and, after a successful loan spell at Derby County, completed a permanent move to Pride Park just 12 months later.

Mears made 26 appearances in his first season with the Rams, but will forever be known by their supporters as being part of a squad that won only once in 38 league outings - as they were relegated from the Premier League with just 11 points.

A controversial loan move to Marseille failed to put Mears back on the map, although he rediscovered his best form during a two-year stint at Burnley between 2009 and 2011, winning the club's Player of the Year award in his final season before moving across Lancashire to join Bolton on a free transfer.

The once-capped Jamaica international suffered a broken leg days after his move to Wanderers and he made just 32 appearances during a three-year stay, before being released at the end of his contract in June.

At 31 years of age, Mears will be hoping to prove he still has a future in the game and Toffees boss Roberto Martinez will make that decision in the coming days - as he continues to search for cover at right-back.
