Bolton are reportedly closing in on the signing of Aston Villa defender Chris Herd on an initial one-month emergency loan deal.

Herd, a two-time Australia international, has been at Villa since the age of 15 and made his Premier League debut for the club as a late substitute in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in November 2010 - following spells out on loan at Port Vale, Wycombe Wanderers and Lincoln City, respectively.

The 25-year-old has made 42 senior appearances during his time at Villa Park, 20 of which came in 2011/12. He featured just twice last season and has yet to play so far this campaign, after being given time off by manager Paul Lambert for 'personal reasons'.

Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman is desperate for cover at right-back, after injury and illness to Kevin McNaughton forced him into playing utility man Tim Ream in that position in recent games.

McNaughton is closing in on a return to full fitness, and could face Chelsea on Wednesday night, but after seeing a loan move for Nottingham Forest's Greg Halford collapse last week, Freedman looks set to bring Herd to Macron Stadium for an initial term of 28 days - which could later be extended until Christmas.
