Bolton are closing in on the emergency loan signing of Nottingham Forest utility man Greg Halford.

Wanderers came close to signing the 29-year-old on the final day of the summer transfer window, but saw a move fall through after failing to complete a deal which would have seen Jermaine Beckford move to Fulham.

Dougie Freedman is desperately trying to boost his squad ahead of Sheffield Wednesday's weekend visit to Macron Stadium and has pinpointed Halford as the man to fill the void left by Kevin McNaughton - who is a major doubt to face the Owls because of a hamstring injury.

Halford can play in any position down the right-hand side of the pitch, as well as in an attacking role. He has made 82 appearances since joining Forest from Portsmouth in July 2012, but has yet to feature for the Reds this season under the new management of Stuart Pearce.

Hayden White and Oscar Threlkeld are also pushing for a starting role in the Wanderers defence, but Halford's imminent arrival provides Freedman with a senior option as he prepares for a run of seven games inside the next three weeks.
