Bolton boss Dougie Freedman has ended his interest in Jordon Ibe and Max Clayton, saying he simply can't afford to bring them to the club.

Ibe, who plays his football at Liverpool, has been one of Freedman's main targets this summer and had looked set to move to Macron Stadium on a season-long loan, but rival interest from Derby County gave the Reds a decision to make and the 18-year-old is reportedly on the verge of a switch to the iPro Stadium.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Freedman said: "Jordon looks like he is going to Derby. It looks like we have missed out on that one once again.

"The contribution that we would have had to make financially was too difficult for us to meet."

Meanwhile, Clayton, who was released by Crewe Alexandra at the end of last season, spent last week on trial with Wanderers and, despite impressing Freedman, won't be returning to the club on a permanent basis.

Despite being out of contract, his former club would command a fee, potentially through a tribunal, as he is just 20 years of age - a fee the Trotters boss says is too high. He has since flown over to Denmark, where he is training with FC Midtjylland.

Commenting on Clayton's situation, Freedman added: "He's a good player and we liked him - he's the kind of player we should be bringing to the club.

"But the fee that Crewe wanted is out of our reach."
