Bolton Take Former Crewe Forward On Trial

Bolton have handed a trial to highly-rated young forward Max Clayton, who left Crewe Alexandra at the end of last season.

Dougie Freedman is desperately trying to bolster his attacking options, with Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe due to sign in the next 48 hours, and the Wanderers boss has turned his attention to Clayton whilst waiting to see the outcome of other potential leads.

The 20-year-old, who is also being linked with Premier League duo Everton and Sunderland, recently spent time on trial at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He recently rejected a new three-year contract at the Alexandra Stadium and will be the subject of a tribunal, should any interested party fail to agree a compensation package with his former club.

Crewe remain hopeful that Clayton, who scored in their 2013 Johnstone's Paint Trophy final success, will return to the club, but manager Steve Davis admits the player has ambitions to play at a higher level than Alex can currently provide.

"I am not really sure what Max and his advisor have planned," Davis told Crewe's official website.

"We haven't had a conversation with his agent. I have had a conversation with Max and he is looking for somewhere else. Crewe doesn't appear to be on his radar.

"We would welcome him back but that is entirely his decision. We could only ask and I can assure the fans that the club has done everything we can to try and keep him here. That has been the case ever since he rejected our first contract offer last year.

"I don't know where he will go. All we can do is wait and see."

Clayton, who has been capped at every level for England from under-16 through to under-19, made his debut for his hometown club April 2011 and went on to play 92 times for the Railwaymen, scoring 16 goals.
