Southend United have completed the signing of Bolton defender Cian Bolger for an undisclosed fee - believed to be in the region of £75,000.

Bolger joined Wanderers from Leicester City in January 2013 and has regularly captained the club's development side over the last 18 months. He featured extensively throughout the pre-season schedule, but leaves the Macron Stadium without a competitive first-team appearance under his belt.

The 22-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Roots Hall, with the option of another 12 months on top of it, and will link up with former Wanderers player, coach and assistant manager Phil Brown - who is the current manager of the Shrimpers.

Speaking to Southend's official club website about Bolger's arrival, Brown said: "I can't emphasise enough how much this deal means to me as the manager of this football club.

"For the chairman to spend an undisclosed fee on a player who first appeared on the market two weeks ago for loan is a real statement of intent.

"To get a player of Cian's quality through the door is fantastic news, and with three arrivals on Monday, it really builds up the excitement ahead of the new season."

After seeing a loan spell at the club cut short due to injury, just 80 minutes in his debut, Bolger is keen to put last season's disappointment behind him and is focused in playing first-team football on a regular basis.

"I'm very pleased to have come back to Southend," Bolger said. "My spell last time was very short, but I now have the opportunity to really settle down.

"I felt it was time for me to make the permanent move instead of going on loan. It was a big decision, but I'm sure it will prove to be the right one."
