Bolton defender Joe Riley will spend the first half of this season out on loan, after joining Oxford United until January 1, 2015.

Nearly three years have passed since Riley made his first-team debut for Wanderers - in a 2-1 League Cup victory over Macclesfield Town in August 2011 - but he has made just nine senior appearances for the club due to a succession of serious injuries.

Although he has been tipped for a bright future, the 22-year-old hasn't featured in a competitive first-team game since January 2013. He missed the second-half of the 2012/13 campaign with a broken foot, before missing the entirety of last season after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament.

He was due to join Shrewsbury Town before last season's injury, but, after impressing in pre-season, he will finally get the chance to play regular first-team football by linking up with League Two promotion hopefuls Oxford United.

With the likes of Kevin McNaughton, Hayden White and Oscar Threlkeld also competing for the right-back spot at the Macron Stadium, Riley will be given time to play on a weekly basis with the hope of pushing for a place in Dougie Freedman's squad in the New Year.
