Bolton boss Dougie Freedman has confirmed Jay Spearing will be the club's new captain, with Matt Mills announced as vice-captain.

Despite wearing the armband for the majority of last season, the official role of club captain was occupied by Zat Knight - who was released at the end of June, following the expiration of his contract.

Spearing, who has made a total of 85 appearances over two years with Wanderers, will now take on the role on a permanent basis, while Mills, who looked set to leave the club last summer, will step in when the former Liverpool midfielder is unavailable for selection.

Speaking to the club's official website about his decision, Freedman said: "We've built up many leaders in our current group, and Jay and Matt are two of the players who are at the forefront of what we're trying to do here."

When asked what it meant to be handed the captaincy at the Macron Stadium, Spearing described the decision as a 'very proud moment' and he hopes to follow in the footsteps of some of the greats who have occupied the role previously.

"It's a massive honour to have been named as club captain," Spearing said. "Having seen the great players who have previously had this honour, it is a very proud moment in my career.

"We've got a great group of players and staff here, and we're now all looking forward to the new season."
