Andy Robinson, whose contract at Bolton was terminated last week, has gone on trial with Championship rivals Charlton Athletic.
Robinson joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Southampton in May, signing a one-year deal at the Macron Stadium, but was granted his release last week having failed to adapt to his new surroundings.
The 21-year-old, who spent the final few weeks of last season on loan with the Trotters, played 56 minutes on Wednesday night as an experimental Charlton side were beaten 1-0 by non-league Ebbsfleet United at the PHB Stadium.
Robinson was a late replacement for former Arsenal forward Zak Ansah, who suffered an injury in the warm-up, and featured on the left-hand side of the Addicks midfield.
A second-half penalty from Matt Godden was all that separated the two sides at full-time, as Bob Peeters' side suffered defeat just over two weeks from the start of the new Football League season.
