Bolton boss Dougie Freedman praised his players and paid tribute to their Rochdale counterparts, after seeing his side win 2-0 at Spotland on Tuesday evening.

Goals in each half from Neil Danns and Conor Wilkinson gave Wanderers victory against their near neighbours, who are a side expected to be challenging for promotion to the Championship this coming season.

Speaking after the game, Freedman admitted he was delighted with the way his players conducted themselves and he thanked Dale boss Keith Hill for the competitive workout in difficult conditions.

"It was a great workout for us," Freedman told the club's official website. "We've got to give credit to Keith Hill and his Rochdale team, because the game was played in a fantastic spirit.

"We've picked these pre-season fixtures out specially. It was a competitive game and both teams went about it in the right way.

"I thought our approach play, particularly in the first half, was very good.

"I feel we can improve a little bit defensively in terms of screening the middle, but all in all it was a fantastic workout.

"I'm very pleased with where we are at this stage. I've got a good, honest group of players. We're all now heading in the right direction and we're working hard for each other.

"You can see that in the team. We all want to work for the best of the football club."
