Former Bolton defender Gary Cahill is among the favourites to be named England's next captain, following Steven Gerrard's retirement from international football.

Gerrard brought an end to a 14-year international career on Monday, following the Three Lions' disappointing group stage exit at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

The Liverpool midfielder represented his country 114 times, making him the third most-capped player of all time - behind Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115) - in a career which saw him feature at six major tournaments.

With manager Roy Hodgson preparing for a future without star names such as Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, Cahill, currently of Chelsea, has risen towards the top of what appears to be a three-man shortlist for the vacant captaincy.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, who has been capped 95 times by England, is the runaway favourite for the post, with Cahill and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart believed to be his closest rivals.

Cahill is relatively new to the international fold, with just 27 caps to his name, while Hart currently holds 43 caps after claiming the number one shirt as his own in the World Cup qualification campaign of the last two years.

Below are the names in contention to be named the next England captain: *
