Marc Tierney will miss the start of next season, after undergoing an operation to remove scar tissue from the broken leg he suffered last September.

Tierney joined Bolton on a free transfer from Norwich City last summer, but has been restricted to just nine appearances for Dougie Freedman's side - having broken his leg against Yeovil Town just weeks after signing on at the club.

The 28-year-old was initially expected back at the end of last season, but has been ruled out for the next couple of months after surgery that also involved a check-up on the screws that were inserted into the bone last year.

Tim Ream, last season's Player of the Year, is expected to fill the void until Tierney is available for selection, but Freedman may decide to bring in cover in the form of a loan move - although Alex Baptiste and the young duo of Andy Kellett and Oscar Threlkeld are also capable of occupying that position on a temporary basis.
