Voting for the 2013/14 Bolton Wanderers Player of the Season is now open. Here, we analyse one of the nominees - Zat Knight.

Zat Knight moved to Bolton from Aston Villa in July 2009, in a transfer worth £4million. He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on the opening day of the 2009/10 Premier League season and went on to play 41 times in his first campaign at the Reebok Stadium, scoring once - in a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 2010.

He made 39 appearances in his second season at the club, before playing 29 times as Owen Coyle's side were relegated from the top flight at the end of 2011/12.

Knight was widely tipped to be one of the likely departures after Wanderers dropped into the Championship, but he signed a new two-year contract at the club and set himself the target of winning over the Bolton boo-boys and helping the club win promotion at the first attempt.

He played 47 games last season and took the captain's armband in the final months, after news broke that Kevin Davies was to leave the club after 10 years of service. His temporary spell as skipper, and subsequent improvement in form, led to him being handed the responsibility on a permanent basis last summer.

He started the season poorly, though, playing his part in Bolton's worst league start in 111 years. He was heavily criticised after Wanderers were beaten 4-1 at Blackburn Rovers last August and found himself out of the team less than two months into the season.

Knight was restricted to cameo roles as a substitute as Bolton got themselves back on form throughout November and December, before returning to the side over the Christmas and New Year period.

The two-time England international produced one of the worst displays of his career as Wanderers drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough on New Year's Day and was part of the team that lost 7-1 at Reading later that same month.

Since then, however, Knight has arguably been in the best form of his time at the Reebok Stadium, but his previous flaws meant he has struggled to win over the majority supporters. Goals at Leeds United and Yeovil Town in March were met with sarcastic laughter rather than the usual applause, and his goal at Huish Park could be his last as he looks set to leave the Trotters in the summer.

Knight, who turns 34 today, could play his last game for Dougie Freedman's side when they play host to Birmingham City on Saturday and, if that proves to be the case, he will be looking to sign off in style.

At the time of writing, Knight has made 34 appearances this season, scoring two goals. In that time, Bolton have won 12, drawn 10 and lost 12 games in all competitions.
