Voting for the 2013/14 Bolton Wanderers Player of the Season is now open. Here, we analyse one of the nominees - Neil Danns.

Danns was an unpopular signing when he joined Bolton on loan from Leicester City last September, with supporters disappointed that an out-of-favour player from a fellow Championship club was about to be given the opportunity to push for a first-team place at the Reebok Stadium.

His arrival came at a key point in Wanderers' season, with Dougie Freedman's winless in nine league outings - marking their worst start to a season since 1902. Results quickly changed, however, as a goalless draw at Blackpool in his debut game was followed up with a run which included four wins and two draws.

Bolton's first win of the season came at Birmingham City on October 5, when a 64th minute header from Danns sealed victory against his former side.

His attitude, style of play and eye for goal resulted in Wanderers fans quickly taking to the 31-year-old, who scored three times in his final four games before heading back to Leicester after the Boxing Day win at Barnsley, in which he scored the only goal.

When the January transfer window opened, Freedman made the signing of Danns his number one priority and a deal was completed less than 24 hours before Bolton played host to Blackpool in the third round of the FA Cup. The midfielder started that game at the Reebok Stadium and played 90 minutes as they went on to beat their Lancashire rivals to book a place in the next round.

Danns remained a key part of the squad during his second loan spell, but results couldn't have been any more different to the ones he picked up in the opening few games of his original deal. After that cup victory, Wanderers failed to win any of the next eight games he played in, until a 2-0 victory over Watford on February 22 brought about a change in fortunes for the struggling Trotters.

Since that win over the Hornets, Bolton have lost just one game in which Danns has played - 2-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion on March 15. That is the only defeat in a run of 11 games, seven of which have ended in wins.

Danns ended a run of 17 games without a goal by netting the opener in a 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers on April 8, before repeating that deal at Sheffield Wednesday, in a 3-1 win, last Saturday.

Having started the season as a relative unknown to Wanderers supporters, many of whom were disappointed with his signing, Danns will end the campaign as one of the most popular figures at the Reebok Stadium, having agreed to join the club on a free transfer in the summer - signing a 12-month contract.

At the time of writing, Danns has made 34 appearances this season and scored six goals. In that time, Bolton have won 15, drawn 10 and lost nine games in all competitions.
