Voting for the 2013/14 Bolton Wanderers Player of the Season is now open. Here, we analyse one of the nominees - Matt Mills.

Signed from Leicester City in July 2012, Mills' debut season at the Reebok Stadium couldn't have gone much worse. A reported fee of around £2million is said to have exchanged hands between Wanderers and the Foxes but the player was restricted to just 18 appearances after injuring his hamstring at Huddersfield Town in December 2012.

Aside from a late cameo role in that season's reverse fixture, which ended in a 1-0 win for Bolton, Mills had to wait until September 2013 before making another league start for the club, which came in the midst of their worst start to a campaign in 111 years.

The 27-year-old had been linked with summer moves to Leeds United and Blackpool and recently admitted in a radio interview that he knew how far out of favour he was when he looked through a matchday programme and realised his name wasn't available for sponsorship.

Nevertheless, the former Manchester City and Reading defender became a regular part of the side upon his return - striking up a successful partnership with Tim Ream at the heart of the Bolton defence.

An injury to Marc Tierney in September saw Ream move out to left-back, allowing the likes of Zat Knight and David Wheater to find their way back into the first-team fold after a disastrous start to the campaign. The one constant in the backline, however, was Mills, who was starting to win over his doubters with a series of impressive performances.

With goals chalked off and an own-goal being credited to him in a 5-3 defeat at Leicester City, Mills finally notched his first of the campaign - at the right end - by scoring the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on January 11, 2014.

But Mills' long spell in the team came to an end on February 22, with a muscle injury keeping him sidelined for nearly two months. He returned on April 12 and helped Bolton to back-to-back clean sheets, against Barnsley and Charlton Athletic, before a defeat to Leicester was followed up with a Man of the Match performance in a 3-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

At the time of writing, Mills has made 34 appearances this season and scored one goal. In that time, Bolton have won 10, drawn 11 and lost 13 games in all competitions.
