Stuart Holden is to undergo a scan on his injured right knee, before heading back to America to get an assessment from his surgeon.

Holden made his return for Bolton's development squad on Monday night, but lasted just 23 minutes of their 3-2 defeat to Everton after hurting his previously injured knee when playing a ball out to the wing.

A statement coming out of the club says the 28-year-old has suffered a 'resurfacing of last summer's injury', which appears to suggest a recurrence of the cruciate ligament injury he sustained playing for his country in last July's Gold Cup final against Panama.

More will be known when results of the scan have been analysed by specialists, but Holden's season looks to be over at this stage. His Wanderers contract is due to expire at the end of June and his future could rest on a decision from the player, his surgeon and Trotters boss Dougie Freedman.
