Reports on Thursday night suggest Bolton are in talks with Aston Villa over a potential loan deal for Alan Hutton.

Hutton is out of favour at Villa Park, having gone almost 21 months without a competitive first team game for Paul Lambert's side. His last appearance for the Villans was on May 6, 2012, in a 1-1 draw against his former club Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old, who spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and Real Mallorca last season, has 18 months left to run on his contract but looks set to leave the club on yet another temporary arrangement before the closure of the emergency loan window.

Wanderers will be able to sign the right-back for the remainder of the Championship season, but must first agree on terms - as they are unable to pay the player's full £40,000-a-week in wages.

Dougie Freedman is down to the bare bones in defence, with Matt Mills being ruled out for between four and six weeks on Wednesday, and the arrival of Hutton could allow Alex Baptiste to revert to left-back - with Tim Ream partnering David Wheater in the centre.
