Cian Bolger's loan at Southend United is over, after he suffered an ankle ligament injury in his debut on Saturday.

Bolger linked up with Phil Brown's side last Friday and played 79 minutes in their goalless draw at York City at the weekend. After recovering from an earlier cut to his right eye, the former Leicester City youngster was forced from the field after injuring his ankle late in the second half.

The 21-year-old has returned to the Reebok Stadium for an assessment and treatment on his injury, with the Southend boss predicting a likely lay-off of up to two months.

"We've not had much luck bringing in defensive loanees this season, having lost Luke O'Neill already after just one game," Brown told Southend's official club website.

"Luke has gone back to Burnley and will probably be out for eight to ten weeks which is frustrating.

"Now Cian has also had to go back because of the ankle injury he picked up, and he could be out for just as long.

"It's frustrating because he did really well on Saturday, but took a knock to the head too with a cut just below his eye.

"There's not much that we can do, but we thank him for his efforts on Saturday after spending just an hour with his teammates.

"We may have another look in the loan market, but we've got the players in the dressing room who need to step up.

"It might be a case of third time lucky with defenders, but I might just bring a striker in on loan and play him there to avoid injury!"
