Bolton defender Cian Bolger has joined League Two side Southend United on an initial 28-day emergency loan deal.

Bolger joined Wanderers from Leicester City in January 2013 but has yet to make his senior debut for the club, although he is the regular captain of Jamie Fullarton's development squad - who most recently beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-2.

The 21-year-old has previously enjoyed spells on loan at Bristol Rovers and Colchester United and will go straight into the Shrimpers squad for their game against York City on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking about the arrival of Bolger, Brown said he was looking forward to seeing the big centre-half provide some leadership during his brief stay at Roots Hall.

"We've been tracking the lad for a few weeks now and the reports from Bob Shaw on him have been very impressive," Brown told Southend's official club website.

"He's not played first-team football with Bolton, but I saw him against Spurs' under-21's and it was a very dominant defensive performance against a strong Spurs side.

"He's a big voice on the pitch and has all the attributes of strong a defender. We've been missing that since Luke Prosser's injury.

"I'm delighted we have been able to bring him in. It will help freshen things up and I'm sure he can play an important role."
