Bolton look set to miss out on the signature of Macedonian defender Goran Popov, after the Premier League and Football League blocked the move.

Popov, who is currently on loan at West Bromwich Albion from Dynamo Kyiv, was pencilled in for his Wanderers debut against Burnley on Tuesday night, only for the football authorities to stop the deal going through at the eleventh hour.

In what is a strange scenario, the 29-year-old would have actually moved to the Reebok Stadium from his current loan side and not his parent club back in Ukraine.

As his main club are based overseas, authorities deemed the move to be an international transfer and refused to grant it under emergency loan window rules - which permits domestic moves only.

Both West Brom and Dynamo Kyiv are happy for the move to be sanctioned, so Wanderers have made an appeal to have the decision overturned and hope to have him available for Saturday's trip to Millwall. However, at the time of writing, the bid to bring Popov to the Reebok Stadium was on the verge of collapsing.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Bolton boss Dougie Freedman said: "It's with the lawyers right now. We'll wait and see what happens."
