Dougie Freedman wants to bring Cardiff City's Kevin McNaughton and Joe Mason back to Bolton, but says he will have to wait until the clubs have met in the FA Cup.

Wanderers welcome the Bluebirds to the Reebok Stadium on Saturday 25th January 2014, with a place in the fifth round of the competition up for grabs.

Both McNaughton and Mason enjoyed loan spells with the Trotters late last year and remain high on Freedman's January wish list. The Bolton boss admits to making initial enquiries about bringing them back to the North West, but the response he has received means any deal is likely to rest on City's progression in the cup.

"The draw did us no favours at all," Freedman told The Bolton News. "The feedback I am getting from Cardiff is that they are in the cup and are going to hold their players.

"Joe and Kevin are two fantastic players who did very well for us, but the news from Cardiff is 'call us back at the end of the month.'

"Hopefully we beat them in the cup and that may be a better way of doing it, in a strange kind of way."
