Dougie Freedman will hand a first Bolton start to Joe Mason on Saturday, when Wanderers host Doncaster Rovers at the Reebok Stadium.

Wanderers go into the game on the back of successive defeats and Freedman says he will freshen things up at the weekend, following a below-par performance against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

The Trotters boss says Mason will make his first start following his loan move from Cardiff City and he may make a couple of other changes in order to secure victory in the first league meeting with Rovers since May 1987.

"Over the last few games I feel we've maybe lacked a bit of energy," Freedman told the club's official website. "With that in mind we're going to be giving young Joe Mason a run out.

"He has trained very well and will come into the side for Saturday's game and hopefully freshen things up for us.

"Joe probably feels he has got a point to prove, and that's certainly something we can benefit from.

"When you sign a loan player he has got to come to the club with the right attitude, and Joe certainly has that.

"He is a player I have tried to sign on a number of occasions and he has been good to work with so far. He deserves this opportunity and I'm sure he'll take it."
