Jay Spearing was named Championship Player of the Year at the Northwest Football Awards on Monday night.

Spearing, who was up against Blackburn Rovers' Jordan Rhodes and Blackpool's Tom Ince, claimed the award for his performances throughout 2013.

The 24-year-old, who also won Bolton's Player of the Year award, for 2012/13, played 39 times for Wanderers last season, during a loan spell from boyhood club Liverpool.

His performances lead to a permanent transfer in the summer, with the Trotters paying an initial fee in the region of £1million to the Anfield club. He has since played a further 13 games for Dougie Freedman's side, and has regularly taken the captain's armband in the absence of Zat Knight.

Speaking to the club's official website, Spearing admitted his delight at winning the prestigious award.

"I am delighted to win the award - it was completely unexpected, but I'm thrilled to have won it," he said. "I'd like to thank everybody who voted for me as it means a lot."

On a successful night for Wanderers, the club also scooped the award for Community Initiative of the Year. The Bolton Wanderers Community Trust beat off competition from both Blackburn Rovers and Morecambe, with their Wanderers Hearts & Goals scheme. They shared the award with Everton in the Community, whose Safe Hands initiative also received recognition from judges.
