Robin van Persie became the Netherlands' all-time record goalscorer on Friday night, as his hat-trick all but ended Hungary's hopes of World Cup qualification.

van Persie's treble of goals takes him up to 41 at international level, more than any other player in the history of his nation.

Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan played the full 90 minutes on a disappointing night at the Amsterdam ArenA, as Hungary slipped to fourth in their qualifying group with just one game left to play, after a humiliating 8-1 defeat.

van Persie opened the scoring with 15 minutes played before Kevin Strootman, Jeremain Lens and a second from the Manchester United forward made the half-time score 4-0 to the hosts.

Balasz Dzsudzsak pulled one from the penalty spot in the opening minute of the second half, but van Persie restored the Netherlands' four-goal advantage by completing his hat-trick six minutes later - making history in the process, by scoring his 41st goal for Oranje.

Szilard Devecseri's 64th minute own goal made it six, while late goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Arjen Robben completed a miserable night for Bogdan and his country - who need to beat Andorra on Tuesday night, and hope Romania and Turkey both suffer defeat, to have any chance of claiming a place in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
