Bolton manager Dougie Freedman and captain Zat Knight remain hopeful that a summer move for Jay Spearing can be concluded.

Spearing is surplus to requirements at Anfield and Liverpool are keen to sell the player, who has just 12 months left on his existing contract. He recently turned down a move to Blackburn Rovers, with his sights seemingly set on a return to the Reebok Stadium - where he spent last season on loan.

Speaking after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Burnley, Freedman responded to a chant from the 2,500 travelling supporters urging the Wanderers boss to make a move for the 24-year-old.

"Jay is a fantastic player - our player of the season last year - he's available and we're going to try our very, very best to make it happen," Freedman told The Bolton News.

"We've got Financial Fair Play and I have got a responsibility to this football club. I know they (fans) don't want to hear it, but I have.

"We've done very well with free transfers and if something with Jay comes up and the deal is right for the football club then, yes, we'll be looking at it."

A move for the Reds midfielder has also been backed by Knight, who believes Bolton need to fill the void left by a season-ending injury to Stuart Holden.

"Jay is a fantastic player and did really well for us last season," Knight told the Daily Star.

"That's what we need. We need a strong squad and if we can get him it would be an added bonus. We have just lost Stuart Holden to injury.

"But if we can get someone of the quality of Jay Spearing then it would be a great addition to the team.

"As players, it's out of our hands. If the club want him then hopefully we can go and get him."

Spearing made 39 appearances during his loan spell at Bolton last season, scoring two goals.
