Bolton defender Tyrone Mears has turned down the opportunity to join Millwall on a season-long loan deal.

Reports on Wednesday evening suggested the former Burnley man was set to hold talks with Lions boss Steve Lomas on Thursday morning, allowing him to see out the final 12 months of his Wanderers contract at The Den.

However, Mears rejected the chance to travel down to London as he would like to remain in the north west for family reasons.

The 30-year-old joined Bolton in July 2011 but suffered a broken leg in his first week of training. He featured just once in his debut campaign at the club, before making a further 28 appearances last season.

Despite the summer sale of Sam Ricketts, Mears is currently behind Alex Baptiste in the pecking order. Joe Riley is expected to miss the majority of the season with a knee ligament injury but Dougie Freedman will be able to call upon youngster Hayden White, who recently signed from Sheffield Wednesday.
