Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a one-month loan deal.

Holden has featured just three times for Wanderers this season and hasn't started a league game since suffering major knee damage in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United in March 2011.

He will remain in the Steel City until April 24, 2013, and could make his debut when Wednesday play host to fellow strugglers Barnsley on Saturday.

The United States international is out of contract at the end of the season but it is understood Trotters boss Dougie Freedman wants to offer fresh terms to the 27-year-old, with a short-term move being for no other reason than allowing him to play games on a regular basis.

Speaking about the decision to let Holden leave the Reebok Stadium, Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman says it does not signal the end for the player - who is in advanced talks over a new contract at the club.

"Stu has played several reserve games but we're at the stage where he needs that test," Freedman told The Bolton News.

"I'm looking at the bigger picture because we've got young Josh Vela and Medo, and this move suits everyone."
