Bolton legend Ricardo Gardner could soon be playing Championship football, after joining struggling Barnsley on trial.

Gardner has been without a club since leaving Wanderers at the end of last season. He recently spent time on trial at West Ham United but failed to earn a permanent deal at the Boleyn Ground.

Hammers assistant manager Neil McDonald said Gardner's time at the club was to help the 34-year-old regain his fitness as he looked to secure a contract elsewhere, which may soon bare fruit.

Tykes boss David Flitcroft will know all about the Jamaica international as he was born and raised in Bolton, while he spent time at Preston North End, Rochdale, Macclesfield Town and Bury - amongst others - during a 19-year playing career, and he admits a decision will be made in the coming days.

"We're looking at Ricardo but more importantly he's looking at us," Flitcroft told the Barnsley Chronicle.

"He was in my office after the game on Tuesday and he likes the atmosphere of the place. He was with the lads in the dressing room and he could be a good option for us.

"He's played for West Ham in two under 21 games and is fit and ready. We got a tip off from Sam Allardyce and Neil McDonald that we might be able to have a look and I'll decide on Friday. His experience and know-how could be vital in this challenge (of avoiding relegation).

"Age isn't on Ricardo's side so he won't be an ideal replacement for Scott Golbourne but he could give us something different."
