Ricardo Gardner has emerged as a surprise target for West Ham United, where he is currently on trial.

Gardner has been without a club since leaving Bolton at the end of last season, after a 13-year spell at the Reebok Stadium - where he made 410 competitive first-team appearances.

The 34-year-old turned out for the Hammers' development squad on Friday night, as they fell to defeat against Southampton - less than two years after he turned down a move to the London club.

Sam Allardyce's team are without first choice left-back George McCartney, who injured knee ligaments in December.Dan Potts, Emanuel Pogatetz and former Wanderers player Matt Taylor could potentially fill the void left by McCartney's absence, but the West Ham boss looks set to run the rule over Gardner - whose career has been blighted by a succession of serious knee injuries.

Should Gardner be offered a contract at the Boleyn Ground, he could link up with former Bolton teammates such as Jussi Jaaskelainen, Kevin Nolan, Joey O'Brien, Ricardo Vaz Te and the aforementioned Taylor.
