BWFC Transfer Window Round-Up

The January transfer window has come to an end and, all in all, it has been a rather productive month at Bolton Wanderers.

Just two months after Dougie Freedman was appointed as manager, he was given the task of turning around the fortunes of a club who were struggling both on and off the pitch - with minimal funding.

His biggest job was to, perhaps, reduce the average age of the playing squad and also bring down the weekly wage bill.

Jacob Butterfield failed to impress during a loan spell from Norwich City and returned to Carrow Road on January 2nd, as the restructuring process began. Freedman's first permanent signing of the window arrived a week later, with Wanderers paying out a reported £300,000 for Barnsley forward Craig Davies.

On January 14, Wanderers managed to get one of the club's highest earners off the books - with Martin Petrov making a surprise move to Spanish side Espanyol on a free transfer. Although Petrov left the Reebok Stadium without a fee, the move gave Freedman some leeway to bring in players on a lower weekly wage.

Craig Dawson made a three-month loan move from West Bromwich Albion on January 24, with Banik Ostrava younger Jan Gregus joining him the following day on a 12-month loan deal.

For the large part of the last week, it looked like Bolton were done for the window. Fortunately, Freedman and the rest of the Bolton staff negotiated their deals behind-closed-doors and it wasn't until the final deadline day that further deals came to fruition.

Wanderers completed the permanent signings of Medo Kamara and Cian Bolger from Partizan Belgrade and Leicester City, respectively, while Steve De Ridder joined the club on a one-month loan from Southampton.

Academy graduate Michael O'Halloran extended his loan at Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season, but the biggest surprise came in the final hours - as Benik Afobe had his loan from Arsenal cut short.

With Wanderers managing to boost their squad, lower the wage bill and complete the signings of some talented young players - January will most likely go down as a successful month for Freedman and Wanderers, who also managed to retain the services of Lee Chung-Yong, Mark Davies, Marcos Alonso and David Ngog.
