Bolton have completed the signing of Leicester City development defender Cian Bolger.

Wanderers are thought to have paid a nominal fee for the Republic of Ireland under-19 international, who has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at the Reebok Stadium.

Despite winning the Foxes' Academy Player of the Year award in 2009, Bolger failed to make a single senior appearance for the club and has had three loan spells at League Two's Bristol Rovers in as many seasons.

The Irish-born defender was the subject of a failed bid from Rovers earlier this season and Bolton are thought to have held off competition from a number of clubs to claim his signature.

The 20-year-old will link up with Jamie Fullarton's development squad, but Dougie Freedman hopes the player will make the step up to first-team football sooner, rather than later.

"Although he'll train with the first team squad, Cian is one who will initially play in the development squad," Freedman told the club's official website.

"We believe that he has the potential to be knocking on the door for a regular place in the senior team in the near future."
