Fabrice Muamba has admitted suffering from an abnormal heartbeat during a recent holiday in France.

Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest in March of this year and after successfully recovering in hospital, his chest was fitted with an automatic mini-defibrillator.

Now, for the first time, the 24-year-old has confirmed he was left surprised by an abnormal heartbeat during his recent holiday and was thankful that his defilbrillator was fully operational should it have been required.

"It was a little shock, which caught me off-guard," Muamba told Sky News.

"Everything calmed down very slowly. When I sat down and thought about it, I thought: 'At least it is working!'"

Muamba was speaking as he promoted a new campaign created by the Arrhythmia Alliance, North West Ambulance Service and the Bolton Wanderers Community Trust.

The trust has set the goal of installing 500 wall cabinets outside many of Bolton's public areas, such as football stadia, pubs, churches and community centres, with such cabinets containing defibrillator equipment for emergency use.

"If there was no defibrillator and no people to use it, it would have been a different story for me," he said.

"We want to raise awareness and hopefully somebody can be saved."
