Bolton boss Owen Coyle has praised his players for their strength of character as they secured a 2-1 win over Watford.

First half goals from Matt Mills and Kevin Davies put Wanderers in control of the game, but Lloyd Doyley's strike brought Gianfranco Zola's side back into events just before the hour.

The Trotters managed to soak up the increasing pressure in the final half hour to maintain their unbeaten home run and Coyle believes his players showed the qualities that are required if they are to be successful in the Championship.

"I was delighted with our first half performance," Coyle told the club's official website.

"We came out firing on all cylinders, controlled the game, passed and moved the ball well and scored two good goals.

"Matt's finish was clinical and the skipper, as always, was in the right place at the right time. In fact, he could have had a couple of goals today.

"It would be fair to say that we deserved our lead going into the half-time break, and the advantage could have been even more.

"In the second half, we sat deep and allowed Watford to put us under pressure. Doyley sent over a cross and it landed in the top corner. All of a sudden there is then a real game on.

"As with all these things, when you are defending a one-goal lead, nervousness creeps in on-and-off the pitch.

"Having said that, we stood up to it and could have had another one or two goals for ourselves, notably with the skipper's header which was well saved by Almunia.

"What the players showed within that spell of pressure was they have got the mettle, desire and focus to get those three points. They are essential ingredients in this league.

"We have now picked up seven points out of nine at home and we need to use that now as a platform for when we travel away.

"We know we are more than capable of going on a run, collecting points game after game. We have to make sure we continue this on our travels, starting Tuesday night."
