Ivan Klasnic has returned to German football, signing a one-year contract with Bundesliga side FSV Mainz.

Klasnic was a free agent following his release by Bolton at the end of last season and has opted to return to Germany, despite reported interest from sides such as Liverpool, Queens Park Rangers and Deportivo La Coruna.

Speaking about his move to Mainz, Klasnic admitted the opportunity was too good to turn down, as it presented him with the opportunity to be closer to his family.

"I had a bunch of enquiries, but the chance to play in the Bundesliga for Mainz was the most flattering from my point of view," Klasnic told Mainz's official website.

"Moving to Mainz will also be a boost for me in my private life as it will enable me to have a shorter distance to my daughter. My daughter lives in Hamburg.

"I will soon catch up my fitness deficit with regular training. I will be ready to play regular first-team football for Mainz as soon as possible."

Mainz general manager Christian Heidel believes the 32-year-old will be a welcome addition to his side, given the forward's previous strike rate in the Bundesliga.

"We were looking for an experienced player who knows the Bundesliga well to fit in with our young attack," Heidel said.

"This is exactly what we see in Ivan Klasnic. He has demonstrated his quality, particularly his eye for goal, at all of his previous clubs."

Should be prove his fitness during the international break, Klasnic could be set to make his Mainz debut when they travel to Bayern Munich on September 15.
