Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has warned Owen Coyle that performances and results must improve, following the club's poor start to the season.

Wanderers currently occupy 20th position in the Championship, having won just one of their opening four games.

After overseeing relegation from the Premier League last season, Coyle's position as manager has been challenged by supporters in recent weeks, with travelling fans in attendance at Hull City on Saturday venting their frustration to another away defeat.

Gartside's position has also been challenged by supporters and he has, for the first time, publicly admitted that Coyle needs to improve on the club's nightmare run.

"I can understand the reaction from the fans and I was as disappointed and frustrated," Gartside told The Bolton News.

"We had fantastic support at Hull and it was not good enough. There is absolutely no doubt, we have to improve, and I will be looking for a reaction.

"It is a good squad and we have made some quality additions over the summer, so we have to do better.

"Ahead of the break, we wanted to maintain an average of two points a game, and it is important that we achieve that.

"Clearly we haven't hit that target and it is a given that we must get back on track.

"There is always going to be pressure, but we have to deal with that and start winning games and delivering consistent top notch performances."
