Josh Vela will be sidelined for the next four months after scans revealed he damaged knee ligaments in the Capital One Cup defeat at Crawley Town.

Vela was making his first senior start for Bolton at the Broadfield Stadium, but lasted just six minutes as his studs caught in the ground as he was challenged from behind.

The 18-year-old was sent for scans on Thursday and they have revealed damage to the lateral ligament in his left knee, which will keep him out until the New Year.

The young midfielder bounced back from a broken leg last season to make his Premier League debut and Wanderers boss Owen Coyle believes Vela can use that experience to push his way back to fitness.

"Josh landed awkwardly and that is how the damage has been done," Coyle told the club's official website.

"We feel for him because he had a period of injury last season, but he bounced back from that and appeared in the Premier League where he showed his quality.

"He will bounce back from this too and we will give him every ounce of help to make sure that he returns and becomes the top player that we all believe he can be."
