Marvin Sordell has been named in the 18-man Team GB squad for the 2012 Olympic games.

Stuart Pearce, manager of the Team GB football squad, is familiar with the qualities of Sordell, having worked with the Wanderers striker at England under-21 level.

Speaking about his inclusion in the squad, Sordell admitted he was delighted to have been given the once in a lifetime opportunity.

"To be able to go to the Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity, no matter what sport you play, and for me I am absolutely delighted to have the chance to be involved." Sordell told the club's official website.

"I know Stuart Pearce very well from my time with the England Under-21s and he called me to say that I was in the squad.

"Hopefully I will be able to go there and play my part. Like all the players I want to stake my claim for a place in the team, push on and impress people.

"I've always been one to train hard and work as hard as I can do, so hopefully I will get an opportunity.

"I believe that we won't be going there to make up numbers but to try and push for the gold medal."

Team GB begin their tournament against Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26, before taking on the United Arab Emirates at Wembley on July 29 and Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on August 1.

Sordell will be joined in the squad by Daniel Sturridge, who spent the second half of the 2010/11 season on loan at the Reebok Stadium.
