Liam Stacey, a 21-year-old student at Swansea University, has been jailed for 56 days for comments he made on Twitter about Fabrice Muamba.

Muamba collapsed to the ground after going into cardiac arrest in an FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month and, despite showing signs of improvement, continues to be monitored in the intensive care unit of the London Chest Hospital.

People from around the world left messages of support for the 23-year-old, but Stacey took to Twitter with a tweet saying ""LOL (laugh out loud). F*** Muamba. He's dead!!!".

Angry supporters questioned the Biology student over the tweet, to which he responded with a string of offensive and racist jibes.

Stacey was quickly tracked down and broke down as he was sentenced at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Prior to sentencing, District Judge John Charles said: "In my view there is no alternative to an immediate prison sentence.

"It was not the football world who was praying for him (Muamba). Everybody was praying for his life".

Judge Charles said abusive remarks made to Stacey "via a social networking site were instigated as a result of vile and abhorrent comments made as a result of a young man who was fighting for his life".

Stacey is expected to serve at least half of his 56 day sentence.
