Middlesbrough have rejected an offer from Bolton for defender Rhys Williams.

Wanderers boss Owen Coyle is a long-term admirer of the Australia international and handed the player his league debut during a loan stint at Burnley in 2009.

Coyle is understood to have made an offer for Williams, but has been rebuffed in his attempts to sign the 23-year-old.

Williams currently has 18 months remaining on his contract at the Riverside and is seen as a major player in Boro's push for promotion back to the Premier League.
