Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed he has made an offer for Bolton captain Kevin Davies, which has been rejected by the Trotters.

O'Neill is a known admirer of the 34-year-old and confirmed on Sunday that he may be about to make a bid for the one-time England international.

That offer became a reality on Monday but the Black Cats boss has revealed he was rebuffed in his attempts to land Davies.

"We have have made an offer to Bolton for him and that has been rejected at the moment," O'Neill said. "We will see where we stand later on today."

O'Neill is expected to come back with an increased offer in the next 24 hours that will test Wanderers' desire to keep hold of the striker.
