Sunderland may be about to launch a bid for Bolton captain Kevin Davies, according to Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill.

Davies has been linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium throughout January and with the transfer window slamming shut on Tuesday night, the time has come for clubs to put up or shut up.

O'Neill is a known admirer of the 34-year-old and recently made an enquiry to Wanderers over the availability of the forward.

Trotters boss Owen Coyle confirmed that he has received contact regarding Davies, who he maintains is still in his first team plans.

"I can understand why there is interest in him," Coyle said.

"Martin rang me and I told him Kevin has a big part to play and I don't want him going anywhere. But you can't stop clubs enquiring, I do that myself.

"There is no offer. I think he loves the football club and he's shown that.

"He's been a credit to himself and us. But it's not easy when you are not in the starting line-up."

Despite Coyle's stance, O'Neill admitted he may look to resurrect a deal by making a move for the one-time England international on Monday.

"I did make an enquiry and Owen would obviously want to try to keep him," O'Neill said.

"I may well follow that up tomorrow (Monday) morning."
