The rumour mill finally appears to be coming to life, with just days remaining in the January transfer window.

To date, Gary Cahill's departure to Chelsea and Tim Ream's arrival from New York Red Bulls have been Bolton's only pieces of business this month.

No further deals have been concluded, but, it emerged on Friday, it is not for the want of trying.

Wanderers have been linked with dozens of players throughout the window but have failed to have much success with bringing any to the Reebok Stadium.

Their latest target comes in the form of Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha, a 19-year-old who seems destined for a career at the top of the game.

It was revealed on Friday evening that Bolton had made an official approach for the Palace starlet, with reports indicating Owen Coyle was ready to make a £5million offer for the winger.

With Liverpool and Manchester United thought to be interested in Zaha, Coyle is understood to be furious about the news being leaked by a source close to Palace and may decide to pull out of negotiations for the player.

Palace are said to want a fee of around £10million, which would effectively rule Wanderers out of the bidding.

Bolton have been linked with three more names over the past couple of days. Names such as Brett Holman, Adrian Mariappa and Raheem Sterling.

Wanderers were linked with a move for Sterling during the summer transfer window, but were unable to complete a deal due to Premier League rulings regarding players under the age of 17.

The Liverpool forward celebrated his 17th birthday last month and is now eligible to be loaned to other clubs.

A superb display in a reserve outing against the Trotters last month may have resparked Coyle's interest, although a deal may be a long shot as the player is yet to make his senior bow for Kenny Dalglish's side.

While speculation linking Wanderers with attack minded players may be appealing to supporters, Coyle is also looking to sign another defender.

The latest name to be thrown into the ring is that of Watford's Adrian Mariappa, who is also courting interest from Newcastle United and Swansea City.

Newcastle are thought to have made a £2million bid for the 25-year-old earlier this week, but Watford are only willing to listen to offers in the region of £4million.

Finally, another name on Bolton's radar is AZ Alkmaar's Brett Holman. The Australia international is out of contract with the Dutch side at the end of this season and talks over a new deal are yet to begin.

Alkmaar are reportedly willing to let Holman leave before the closure of the transfer window but with Borussia Monchengladbach also looking at the player, Wanderers looks like a very unlikely destination for him.
