Tim Ream is on the verge of becoming a Bolton player after passing a medical with the club.

News filtered through on Friday that the USA international had been spotted at the club's Euxton training ground and would be attending Wanderers' game against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

With Gary Cahill set to complete a move to Chelsea in the next 24 hours, Ream's arrival will be seen as a major boost to a Bolton squad severely lacking in central defensive options.

A deal for the New York Red Bulls defender, worth a reported £2.5million, looks set to go through within the next few days, but only if Bolton can succeed in gaining a work permit for the 24-year-old.
