Rumour Mill: January 5 - Review

Gary Cahill remains a Bolton player, but day 5 of the January transfer window did not pass without speculation over his future.

Wanderers have publically announced they have accepted an offer from Chelsea for the England international and talks over personal terms opened at the end of last week.

Chelsea boss Andre Villa-Boas admitted the two parties were 'miles apart' over the salary terms of the 26-year-old and rumours arose on Thursday which may explain why a deal has yet to be completed.

Yesterday, the Daily Express reported Cahill was demanding wages of £120,000-a-week from the Blues, who were only willing to offer £70,000.

In a similar article on Thursday, believe Cahill is demanding £100,000-a-week to move to Stamford Bridge, as well as a £4million signing-on fee.

According to that same report, Cahill and his agent believe they are in a strong bargaining position, with the player open to leaving the Reebok Stadium on a free transfer at the end of the season.

A bosman transfer would bring interest from other clubs, such as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, who would be willing to pay the signing-on fee instead of negotiating a transfer with the Trotters.

On an otherwise quiet day on the rumour front, the rest of today's speculation comes from the sometimes controversial social network, Twitter.

If you believe the hype, Gary Cahill will not be the only player to leave Bolton this month.

@soccer_sauce believe Martin Petrov could be on his way out of the Reebok Stadium, with Aston Villa thought to be interested in signing the Bulgaria international.

Petrov's agent, Luchezar Tanev, has reportedly indicated a move to Villa Park could be an option for the 32-year-old, with the player's international teammate Stiliyan Petrov urging him to sign for the Villains.

Our final rumour today comes from @Now_Football, who believe Wanderers captain Kevin Davies could be set to leave the club.

Davies has endured a disappointing season and hasn't started any of the club's last four games, a run which has seen them pick up seven points from 12 in the Premier League.

The former Southampton forward is out of contract at the end of the campaign and Wanderers could be about to call time on his stay at the Reebok, with West Ham United understood to be keen on taking Davies to the Boleyn Ground.
