Bolton boss Owen Coyle has confirmed Marcos Alonso will undergo surgery on the foot injury which forced him to limp out of the victory at Blackburn Rovers.

Alonso had to be replaced after 58 minutes of the 2-1 win at Ewood Park and the former Real Madrid defender went to see a specialist on Thursday to find out the extent of the problem.

Coyle has confirmed the injury is a recurrence of a problem the 20-year-old suffered earlier in the season and he is set to miss six weeks of action.

"Marcos picked up an injury the other night and he will miss a period of time," Coyle told the club's official website.

"There was no new fracture as such, but the pin that was inserted to heal the original fracture has taken a knock and that needs to be replaced.

"He is set to be out for six weeks but we are hoping it will be less than that. We can't be sure right now because the operation will take place today (Friday) and we will take it from there.

"Marcos came in for the Fulham game and looked so confident and assured the other night at Blackburn.

"Marcos has shown that he can handle this level, so when he comes back fit and available he will be ready to kick-on and have a terrific career."
