Gary Speed has died at the age of 42.

Speed, who had a playing career representing Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United, was found at his home on Sunday morning where he is understood to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed Speed's death on Sunday lunchtime.

"At 7.08am on Sunday 27th November Cheshire police was informed of a sudden death at an address in Huntington in Chester," read a Police statement.

"Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead.

"The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed."

During his time as a player, Speed won the First Division title with Leeds and became the first player to record 500 appearances in the Premier League.

He made 139 appearances during a four year spell at Bolton between 2004 and 2008, before seeing out his playing career at Sheffield United.

Speed holds the record number of appearances for a Welsh international footballer, where he ended his career on 85 caps, 44 of which had been as captain.

After taking steps into coaching, Speed was appointed manager of Sheffield United in 2010, before taking charge of his country, later in the year.

He was awarded the Member of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II last year for his services to football and his final public appearance came in Wales' 4-1 friendly victory over Norway earlier this month.

Speed leaves a wife and two children.

Burnden Aces would like to send our condolences to the Speed family on the death of Gary Speed, who passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 42.
