Owen Coyle couldn't hide his delight after his Bolton side ran out 3-1 winners over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

After six defeats on the bounce in the Premier League, Wanderers moved out of the relegation zone with three points against their near rivals thanks to goals from a trio of their summer signings.

Nigel Reo-Coker put the visitors ahead inside four minutes and David Ngog sent the Trotters in 2-1 at the break after Mohamed Diame had equalised for the Latics.

Kevin Davies saw a second half penalty saved by Ali Al Habsi, but Chris Eagles wrapped up the victory in stoppage time after making the most of a mix-up in the Wigan defence.

Speaking after the game, Coyle admitted the international break did his team good and believes the fans could go home with a smile on their faces for the first time since the opening day of the season.

"I thought we were terrific from the first whistle to the last," Coyle told the club's official website.

"We scored three goals and, if the truth be told, we could have had five or six.

"It was never going to be easy - Wigan have a good squad and players like (Franco) Di Santo, (Hugo) Rodallega and (Victor) Moses have real quality. We had to make sure we played to our maximum and we did that.

"We trained very well over the last two weeks, coming off a difficult set of fixtures. We made the most of the international break, working at a high intensity in training and all I asked of the players before today's game was to replicate that in the match.

"Our fans were magnificent. We brought a huge number of supporters with us and it felt like 20,000 with the vocal backing that we got. They've backed us to a man and it's great that they can go home today with smiles on their faces.

"There was a cracking atmosphere inside the ground, and not only was it a derby but it felt like a cup tie. Both teams responded and our performance undoubtedly merited the three points.

"I've said to the players that we have to continue to give those big performances to move ourselves up the league."
