A foot injury sustained by Gretar Steinsson is not as bad as first feared and he could be fit to play Liverpool on Saturday.

Steinsson picked up the knock during Sunday's defeat to Manchester City and was sent to hospital for x-rays on a suspected broken metatarsal.

Results from the scans have come back and revealed no break, with bruising appearing to be the main problem, according to Wanderers boss Owen Coyle.

"Gretar got a bad kick on Sunday and given the run of luck we have had with injuries, we all feared the worse," Coyle told the club's official website.

"It is just bruising and he won't be available for the cup tie on Wednesday night. He will be rested with a view to being fully fit for Liverpool on Saturday."

With Steinsson absent for the visit of Macclesfield Town on Wednesday night, Coyle has confirmed Joe Riley will make his full Bolton debut in place of the Iceland international.

"Young Joe Riley, who has been excelling in the reserves, will make his full debut and a few of the young players who we have got high hopes for will be part of 18," he said.

"It's great for Joe and it provides a base for all the young players at the club because it shows that if you continue to work hard then you will get your opportunities. It all bodes well for the future of the club."
